Before we can effectively learn about Agoraphobia treatment, let's first understand its cause and affects. 

What is Agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia was once interpreted as a 'fear of open spaces or public places' but is now recognised as avoidance behaviour due to the fear of having anxiety symptoms or a panic attack in a public place.  

Avoidance is the most common practice used to prevent the recurrence of panic attack symptoms.  While avoidance of panic attack symptoms may offer a short-term solution, it can lead to the development of Agoraphobia, 
a secondary condition to this anxiety disorder.

The natural instinct for someone that has experienced an anxiety or panic attack is to avoid placing themselves in the same place or similar situation to where it took place originally.  This avoidance behaviour is triggered in the hope of preventing the return of the distressing symptoms.  It's only with a better understanding of one's anxiety that a person can understand that panic attack symptoms are in fact connected to their heightened anxiety levels and not that where they were when the attack first happened, may only be coincidental.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is considered by mental health professionals to be the most effective method of treating agoraphobia and panic sufferers.  It works by working to decrease the negative thoughts and behaviour that lead to anxiety or panic attack.

Other Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Treatments

There are several Agoraphobia treatments available, a few of them are listed here:

In a worst-case-scenario, the person feeling that avoidance is the solution, will become housebound and unable to leave the relative safety of their home.
