Anxiety Support Groups can Help

Anxiety Support Groups can helpTemporary use of anti-anxiety medication, coupled with an anxiety support group, may just be the answer to help you rid yourself of your anxiety.

Today's pace of life is much faster than the 'good old days' of many decades gone by.  Anxiety used to be a condition limited to a small group of people.  Today, there are tens of millions of us who suffer from chronic anxiety disorder.

In fact, anxiety or stress, take your pick, is one of the most common complaints doctors are hearing from their patients.  Any person living on this planet is subject to this debilitating condition.  So what makes us anxious?  Look at all the bad news we absorb daily just by reading the newspaper, watching the news or catching up with the headlines on MSN.  Using these sources as your information 'talking points' is certainly not the worst thing you can do, but it's surely all too negative and enough to kick start your anxiety roller coaster.

You could go and see your doctor to get some advice on how to treat your constant anxiety but you may end up quite disappointed.  The doctor may be quick to prescribe some anti-anxiety medicine or an anti-depressant and possibly certify some time off work.  While these meds may provide some temporary relief from your anxiety, this is really not the best remedy.  These pharmaceutical treatments for anxiety or stress related disorders are simply a stop-gap measure, they treat the symptoms, but not the root cause of your anxiety.

One of the dangers of using anti-anxiety medications over a long period of time is the possible addiction to the underlying substances attached to some of these pharmaceutical treatments.  So it's best to view these meds only as a short term solution.  In the meantime, one possible solution for you, which works well for many others, is to consider joining an anxiety support groups, where you can share your problems and experiences with others suffering similar issues.  An anxiety support groups can help you gain more of an insight into what causes your own anxiety and to learn of more practical ways to dealing with the problem

A savvy doctor or physician that prescribes an anti-anxiety medicine, should also recommend you seek the services of anxiety support groups.  Anxiety sufferers are somewhat reclusive and are not generally good candidates for face-to-face encounters with a group of similarly anxious people.  But before you rule out an anxiety support group as a serious option, you need to know that there are groups that meet in person, as well as those who meet online.  Whilst it might not be your cup of tea, there's no reason to shy away from an anxiety support group as it will help you to better deal with your anxiety ailment.

No matter the severity of your anxiety, or personal views you may hold, the matter of the fact is, that anxiety support groups can be a better long-term solution to help you deal with, or even cure your anxiety.

What happens in a face-to-face anxiety support group setting you ask?  Well  you'll be meeting other people who have similar problems that you do and who also have a common objective – to find ways to get rid of the anxiety and avoid a host of social and health problems that could otherwise develop.  Everyone at an anxiety support group are going through what you are to a larger extent so there's no need to feel awkward or that you're the odd person out.  These anxiety support groups are coordinated by a mediator, typically a trained psychologist and their purpose is to make you feel welcome and get the ball rolling amongst the group's participants.

It won't take long at your first meeting to realise that everyone is talking about the various situations and experiences that contribute to their anxiety condition. Once you begin to settle in to the anxiety support group, a sense of trust develops quickly and  people start opening up and sharing their experiences.

Sometimes humor starts to creep into some of the participant conversations and that's quite a healthy sign, after all, 'laughter is good medicine'.  You begin to learn from one another just how much you have in common and this will help you feel that you are not alone in dealing with this debilitating condition.

Here's another example of how an anxiety support group can help you, let's say there are four other individuals in the anxiety support group whose anxiety triggers are virtually the same as your own.  The mediator will hone in on those triggers and gear the conversation around how each of you tends to deal with the anxiety that's generated by those triggers.  You may get four different answers, or you may get four quite similar answers.  In any case, what works for one may not work for you but at the same time, someone else in the group may have a solution that's right for you.  For example, the woman who weeds like crazy out in her garden and finds relief from her anxiety may strike a chord with you as an idea that may help you deal with some of your own anxious moments in life.

Anxiety support groups can also be found online or in internet forums and are equally as effective.  They lack the face-to-face element which will suit many sufferers and the mediators are trained to use techniques that will inspire camaraderie and trust among the online forum participants.

If you indeed suffer from chronic anxiety, you really don't need to continue living this way.  The realization that you're not alone with this condition is a huge step forward in regaining control of your life, able to deal with life's stresses in a new, proactive and more productive way.

The amount of time you wish to invest participating in an anxiety support group is entirely up to you.  However, once you begin to see the benefits and the reduction in your own level of anxiety however small, you might be reluctant to abandon this group or forum quickly.  You may not only be able to manage your anxiety without medication, but you will have picked up some new techniques of dealing with your own anxiety and will have made some new friends along the way and that's gotta be good for you.
