For a person who is plagued by anxiety and
fear, their life is constantly interrupted, disabling
them from participating in life's important activities
like driving a car. In this article we take a look at how
to overcome driving fear.
The fear of driving a vehicle
can be caused by a number of factors. It may be that
the sufferer has been previously involved in a
vehicle accident or has had a traumatic introduction to learner
education.
Drivers are not
the only one's that can suffer a driving
phobia, passengers
can also suffer from it. This is because they feel that they aren't in
control of the vehicle and a parallel can be drawn to
people who suffer from

Once a person has had
a nerve-wracking driving
experience that
has diminished their confidence
and created anxiety, it can generate a conditioned response
where getting behind
the wheel of a car will be
associated
with those prior fears.
Perhaps the anxiety or fear will only be
triggered in
certain heavy
traffic conditions or when driving a perceivably
long distance
from home. The person does
not have
to recall the experience that caused
their initial fears of driving, as the subconscious will re-generate
the fear under similar or
specific driving conditions.
Its
not easy to
turn off your fears like a
switch as fears are
embedded in both our conscious and subconscious mind.
They become ingrained as a formal belief system that we hold
for a very long time. Getting beyond a fear
like driving doesn’t necessarily mean it
will be
completely wiped from your
mind. We can however find ways of relieving the
panic and anxiety we feel when confronted by our
fears.
The first
thing one has to do is understand the root cause
of their fear of driving
to determine if
it’s a credible fear or an irrational fear. It doesn’t
matter if it is an irrational fear, you
will still need
to find a way to overcome your fear of
driving. A realistic examination of your
driving fear will
help you find a solution to avoiding or controlling
your anxieties.

For example, a
rational fear might be that you're not confident of reaching
your destination or fear that you’ll get lost along the
way.
When digging deep to understand your
fear, you'll
discover that there
have been previous times you’ve taken off but inevitably lost
yourself trying to get from point A to point
B. This is viewed as
a valid fear that would require you to take action by bringing
a map or GPS unit and a cell phone in case you need to phone a
friend!
An irrational
fear might be having a panic attack every time you drive more
than 10 miles from home. When investigating the root
cause of this fear, you may discover that a panic attack
will be triggered whether
you’re close to
home or 20 miles away; the act of driving is therefore
the same and
the fear is viewed as irrational or
unjustified.
Whether
rational or irrational, you’ll need to take the next step in
learning how to overcome the fear of driving.
For irrational fears,
you’ll need to learn how to remove
the anxiety you
feel by calming yourself before the onset of a full blown panic
attack.
You might
calm yourself by using breathing techniques,
self-hypnosis, or using prescribed anti-anxiety
medications (in
some rare cases when you can’t gain control of
your fears
naturally).
