Overcoming test anxiety is not as easy as you think.  While homework can be stressful in itself, test anxiety or exam stress may completely overwhelm a student at that crucial point, just after the allocated reading time!  How many of us have felt so confident the night before the test or exam and by the time you grab your pencil or pen to commence your test, the dark clouds start rolling in and this feeling of amnesia grips you?

For those that routinely feel such stress, the best thing to do is to discuss these concerns with the teacher.  Many times, the teacher can help with some strategies to overcome test anxiety and exam stress.  They may point out breathing techniques before an exam, study and eating habits leading up to the exam or they may be able to seat you in a certain part of the room where distractions and nervousness may be minimised.

Parents may sometimes not be too supportive of a student suffering from test anxiety as they may think there child is being lazy or using excuses to warn them in advance of a not so good result.  Unless you get help, your test anxiety will cause you to perform poorly in tests, which in turn will increase your anxiety.

There is not a single pill you can take, and any therapist won't be able to do everything for you.  One of the best remedies for exam stress is to study and know the material -- then convince yourself of that.  Any material can be learned if sufficient time is dedicated to it and that can sometimes be the key.  The difference, for most students, is in the preparation time it may take to master the material.  Even the best test taker is likely to get nervous if they do not know the material.

Remember, on the night before the test or exam, get plenty of rest and eat a good meal before the test especially if its in the morning. Your brain is the largest of your bodily organs and in order for it to be sharp it needs energy and vitality that comes from a good healthy meal.  Nothing can promote bad thoughts like being exhausted or hungry.  Therefore, making sure to take care of yourself before the test is a key to doing well and improving your test results.  Remain positive in the lead up to a test or exam as it will work to your advantage in reducing your anxiety and stress during the test or exam.
